. it is a different tlesh hold than what the obama administration has laid out when you look carefully at what the president said at the general assembly, the most recent remarks on iran's nuclear program, he said the united states will not allow iran to have a nuclear bomb. i am paraphrasing to a certain degree. the word capability was not there. you did hear it from the israeli prime minister and today you're hearing it once again from mitt romney. mitt romney has been vague. he has gone back and forth on the issue of capability and sometimes he says it and sometimes he doesn't. today he is very cat goral in saying in a romney administration iran would not be able to have that capability of building a nuclear bomb which is significantly different than the threshold laid out by the president. >> and let's talk about syria which has been somewhat of a thorn in the side of this current sitting american president, and mr. romney, governor romney's view of syria, there was something in these prepared remarks that we excerpted that stood out to me and i want to get your take on it. he said

referring to what he called the weak reaction from the obama administration to the uprising, if you will, in iran, a couple of years ago, when there were protests. people were angry and the u.s. was on the sidelines, the president did not directly speak out and the explanation that the administration at the time gave was that the opposition didn't want this to appear to be the opposition to the ayatollahs, standing up in iran, with the backing of united states. that could have been counterproductive. as a result, the obama administration was pretty silent. at the time now where romney is going after him on that, i think there were a few areas where there were some significant differences, but on the whole, after you get through some of the angry rhetoric, there is a lot of agreement between obama and romney, one area of disagreement on arming the syrian rebels. another area of disagreement, how far will iran be able to go in its nuclear weapons capability, the capability of developing a bomb as opposed to actually having a bomb. and the third was on russia. he twice in a speech sing

obama administration takes issue with it and says it isn't true. do you think this could be enough, if mitt romney could make the case for him to win the election? >> i think it's a very important point. remember why he wants to have the tax reform he wants. it's to make sure that the united states grows better than we've seen in the past four years. and what mr. romney is trying to say is, look, we have all these people out of work. we have all these people with jobs whose incomes are not growing. let's lower rates, broaden the base, be respectful of the middle class and the deficit by but have a better tax policy in place. it's good positions for him. the president can't even get the first step right. instead of lowering rates and broadening the base, he is insisting on raising taxes. that's a bit of a tough sell right now. it was the same president who, in 2010, said we can't afford to raise taxes on anyone. the economy is too weak. we're growing faster then than we are now. >> how big an issue could it be for democrats if mitt romney successfully makes the case? >> you know, this i

parts of the world. various officials in the obama administration initially said a protest outside the consulate had turned violent. tonight, though, on the eve of a congressional hearing about the security situation in benghazi, prior to the attack, a new narrative is emerging from the state department. jill dougherty joins me now. so jill, there is a question about whether there were protests outside the consulate. the state department is now saying tonight there was nothing out of the ordinary, that all was quiet before the attack took place. there was no protest. that contradicts what we've heard from other corners of the administration, even days after the attack. how can that be? >> well, anderson, you know, they did not specifically say there were no protests. i just checked what one of those officials said, and he said you would have to ask others about that, but that is not our conclusion. and then this official also said i'm not saying we even have a conclusion. so that's still very, very unclear. but what this official does say tonight, anderson, is that it was quiet, it was

u.s. senator obama implied that the bush administration had descriminated against victims of hurricane katrina. cnn reported the event at the time, but the conservative website called "daily caller" is out with the full version of the speech, saying it's an exclusive videotape. we did cover this when it happened. that conservative website is arguing that it is evidence of president obama, then senator obama, whipping up race hatred. for more on this story and how it's -- how did this 5-year-old tape that did get mainstream media coverage end up resurfacing now as some sort of exclusive showing something that we apparently had all never seen before? >> well, ashleigh, it's a political year. this tape plays very well to the republican base. it's being billed on the right as obama's other race speech, so at a time when some suggest a republican challenger doesn't seem to be getting much traction, the one thing we know what works is dredging up anti-obama sentiments to get the base fired up. now, yes, this is clearly old news. it was well covered five years ago. the other thing t

, early obama administration, the economy was bleeding jobs. 800,000 jobs a month at one point. spurt a growth, back down again. this is what the president says, no, it's not as robust as i would like, but look at this. look at this. since 2010 the economy has been adding jobs including 114,000 in september. that's what the president would say. governor romney says that's not enough. and with less regulation, lower taxes, other pro-business incentives you could create more. last month, health care jobs up, transportation jobs up. this one, wolf, in a report largely encouraging for the president, this is a bit discouraging, manufacturing jobs are down. if you look at the history of manufacturing in the obama presidency, again, you have the huge drop early on and a bit of a recovery since. but manufacturing jobs are still down from the beginning of the obama presidency. let me walk back over to this map for a second. that does matter in places like, the battleground states as well as anyone, ohio's a battleground, iowa's a battleground, in the midwestern industrial states where m

was a sigh of relief. not just in the obama administration but many who said, look, the deadline is next spring, next summer. there isn't going to be a possible israeli military strike before the election. but iran is doubling down. just today prime minister ahmadinejad back in tehran gave a press conference. and he said this, brooke, i'll quote him "we are not people to retreat on the nuclear issue. if somebody thinks they can pressure iran, they are certainly wrong and must correct their behavior." at least in terms of words, which actions are more important than words, but in terms of words not backing down at all. from is going to be the crucial question for the next president whether it's barack obama or mitt romney. >>
